These terms cover portrait commissions from undirectedthought (“I”, “me”), based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. By checking the boxes at checkout and paying, you agree to them. They’re short on purpose. Please read them.

1. The commission

You bring the face. I bring the vision. No art direction on your part. No redos. That’s the way the commission works.

This is a centaur collaboration (Cory Doctorow‘s term): a human and AI working together, with the human directing. I upload your selfie to third-party AI image generation tools myself and paint your portrait from it there, by hand. I approve your portrait before it reaches you. Nothing is sent until I’ve approved it.

You receive one finished digital portrait in your chosen style, delivered within 72 hours of receiving a usable photo.

2. One month. One batch. Never to be seen again.

• Each month there are five styles, with 10 slots per style.
• A style opens on the 1st at 00:00 and retires for good at 00:00 on the next 1st (Toronto time).
• When a style sells out, it’s gone.
• A retired style never comes back. It can’t be bought again, by anyone. This makes it special.

3. Price

• The price starts at $29 USD and climbs as the month goes on and as the style’s slots sell, up to $149 USD.
• When you add a style to your cart, its price is locked for 30 minutes. If you check out later than that, the price is re-checked, and your cart shows the new price before you pay.
• When you place your order, your slot is held for 60 minutes while you pay. If payment isn’t completed in that time, the slot goes back on sale.
• All prices are in US dollars. Payment is handled by PayPal through the checkout on this site.

4. Who can commission, and what photo to send

• You must be 18 or older.
• The photo must be of you, and only you. Please don’t upload anyone else’s face.
• No nudity and no sexually explicit photos. Swimwear is fine.
• By uploading, you consent to your photo being used only to make your portrait.

If you look like you could be under 18, I may ask for proof of age before I start. Send a photo of a government ID showing only your photo and date of birth, with everything else covered. If I don’t receive it within 7 days, you get a full refund.

5. No art direction, no redos

You’re commissioning my interpretation. There’s no art direction, no style requests and no revisions, and there’s no notes field at checkout for that reason.

If you’re not sure you’ll like how I see you, please don’t commission.

6. All sales are final

All sales are final: no refunds.

The only exception: if the uploaded photo is unusable (blurry, face hidden, more than one person), I’ll ask for a new photo before starting. If none is provided within 7 days, you get a full refund.

I’ll email you a private link for the new photo. That link works for 7 days.

Photos I’ll decline. I may decline a photo that shows someone other than you, shows anyone who appears to be under 18, or contains nudity or sexually explicit content. If I decline your photo for any of these reasons, you get a full refund and I delete the photo right away.

If I can’t deliver. If something goes wrong on my side and I can’t deliver your commission, you get a full refund.

7. Delivery

When your portrait is ready, I email you a private link where you can view and download it. The link is for you alone, so please don’t share it. It expires after 30 days, so download your portrait before then.

8. Who owns the portrait, and how you can use it

I keep the copyright in the portrait. You get a personal-use licence:

• You can post your portrait online and use it as your profile picture. A credit to undirectedthought is appreciated, but not required.
• You can print it for yourself, for example on a poster, t-shirt, coffee mug or blanket, through any print site.
• You can’t sell it, or use it for any commercial purpose.
• You can’t use it in, or as, NFTs.

9. The undirectedthought gallery (optional)

At checkout there’s an optional box, unticked by default: “Feature my portrait in the undirectedthought gallery.” If you tick it, I may show your finished portrait in the public gallery. Your selfie is never shown. If you don’t tick it, your portrait stays private.

You can opt out at any time by emailing info@undirectedthought.com. Your portrait comes down within 7 days.

10. Your photo and privacy

I delete your selfie after delivery. I never sell it, and I never train any AI model on it myself. For the details of what I collect, who processes it and how long it’s kept, see the Privacy Policy.

11. The small print

• Each portrait is an artist’s interpretation, not a photographic likeness.
• These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
• I may update these terms. The version you agreed to at checkout is the one that applies to your order.
